2004 / Bolivia

Pins and Needles

Saturday, September 4 2004

At the Copa, Copacabana... With an oxygen tank on one side and a drip on the other... OK, so I did drink too much in Copacabana... (not the good one, the one in Bolivia) and that was before the drinking games started. Something about a hat, and something about sculling your drink. The next morning, trying to...  read more

It may surprise some of the more rural members of my family that I actually went horseback riding for two days and didn't get dragged along by my head with my foot hanging in a stirrup. By the end, I wasn't too bad. We went through Butch and Sundance country, three of us galloping through rivers, racing along the...  read more

On top of the world

Wednesday, July 7 2004

If you spun the Earth from underneath me so that Melbourne was underneath me, I would be four kilometres above most of the populace and wishing I had packed that ultralight backpackers parachute. Potosi, Bolivia is the highest city in the world. To build a city this high you need a damn good reason, because the...  read more

Of all the places you don't want to break down, this is probably right up there.
Broken down car

These kids live on one of the floating islands we visited.
Floating Reed Island Kids

This was probably the best thing I did in the whole trip
Horseriding

Can you believe this landscape...
Big rock

Very high, very cold, lots of Flamingoes. Seriously. The air is so thin up here, almost 5000 feet, the mountains look really close and it's easy to take nice crisp landscape photos!
Green Lake

Green Lake Posing

The North Bolivia / Peru group at the footy - we were the only ones wearing 'Bolivar' hats. The army platoon next to us was cheering for the opposition which made things interesting.
At the Football

That's me, deep in a mine in Potosi holding a stick of dynamite with a fuse in it, which is alight. Take the goddamn photo dammit! (Everyone got a photo - OK give me the dynamite - everybody run... OK hands on ears! ... <WHOOMPH>).
Dubious

Sunrise on an island in the middle of the Uyuni salt lakes. Spectacular - when the sun has just risen the shadow of the island is literally out towards the horizon, and you can see the shadow retracting at lightning speed back towards you in the minutes afterwards.
Island in the middle of salt

Near the incredibly high border crossing between Chile and Bolivia.
Just a mountain

La Paz, capital of Bolivia, is in the middle of a big valley. The suburbs all climb up the walls.

From one of the islands we spent the night.
Lake Titicaca

Me and my horse, Oso. (Bear in Spanish). He was pretty cool, but didn't run as fast as the others - at least not until I showed him the stick. Didn't have to hit him, just show him a stick and a bit of 'so you want some of this then' and he was off.
Me and Oso

I swear, the only time I don't give a thumbs-up in a photo, and everybody else does. This was the group that went on the mining expedition in Potosi - we hung around together for a while.
Mining party

I both like and dislike this town I suppose... spent about a week here relaxing and had a great time, but left something behind. That's travelling...
Sucre

Very funny photo, the best graffiti I saw for the whole trip. (On the front part - you'll need to click on a larger version to see it properly). This was part of a massive train graveyard we walked to about half an hour out of swingin', bustlin' Uyuni
