2002 / Egypt

The long dark flight-plan of the soul

Monday, November 11 2002

The last installment from your intrepid explorer over here in Cairo, just before starting a somewhat heroic journey across the face of the planet back to the land of oz. Since the last installment Duncan and I have hung out in Dahab some more, then we headed back to Cairo. Duncan left last night, unfortunately... read more

Is he dead? No, he's in Dahab

Tuesday, November 5 2002

Hi all, just a quick one today as I'm absolutely wrecked. It's 9:00pm here in Dahab, on the east coast of Sinai, and Duncan and I have just finished our three dives for the day. This is a truly awesome place, the more so because of all the travel weariness that India and Egypt provide. Dahab is a very... read more

Walk like an Egyptian

Monday, October 28 2002

Well, Duncan and I have been in Egypt for a fair while now and have come up with a new little hobby, which is to sing stupid western songs whenever we are in positions of stress, a situation which has cropped up more than once... our trip has been an absolute classic for fans of the Duncan&Mat adventure... read more

My favourite photograph... that's me up there
Sallying Forth

What do you expect to see when walking through a temple in the Pyramid complex? A half naked man doing push-ups! Intrigued, we followed him through to the other side of the temple to where he was doing a body-building photo shoot.

We thought it was such a good idea, we thought we'd give it a go. (Far away, where he couldn't catch us)
Not what was expected

Nice try at being artistic, didn't really work.
Cairo at night

In that whenever I see a photo like this I want to be back there. Great backpacker town in the middle of package holiday Egypt. Kick back and spend a day with Sheesha, Pizza and backgammon, or do something energetic like Snorkel in the beautiful reef right behind you.

Ah... maybe tomorrow...
Dahab Dreaming

We went on a camel trip, Duncan's camel was Dubya (Bush), because he was in front and ate all the tufts of grass. Mine was Tone (Blair), because he was always following along behind, and whenever he stopped to eat the driver would pull him away.

He never got much for his troubles.
Dubya

These suckers are big. Big big big.
Karnak columns

You know what that reminds me of? Naaaah...
Karnak obelisk

Just to show I was there
Me at the pyramids

This photo is only funny if you know the story - if I've told you about the day Duncan and I managed to cross a river and hike a hill in order to try to make it to a town - that we started at - then you'll know this is what we saw when we got to the top of the hill, expecting to see the Nile.

Obviously there's a story there.
Not a lot

Not sure who looks scariest here - one of these days I'll de-red-eye Duncan. Still it was fun pretending to be happy to find a McDonalds in front of armed gunmen.
Ronald with his goons

This is the same location as the shot of me jumping.
Sinai

This was our Felucca (Nile boat) captain, looking confident and assured as he piloted us through the Nile islands. This happy repose was shattered however when he smashed into the rocky side of an island, which quickly caused our boat to fill with water, only a handy beach and frantic bailing saving our butts.
The boat sinker

Well, he is. Read the sign, see for yourself.
