2003 / Australia

Kim and I with Jules' first born...
Freaking me out

Great shot of Drew. I was chest deep in water with the underwater housing on the camera for this one - waiting until I could see the whites of his eyes and then ducking was an experience I won't forget in a hurry.
Angry Man

This is me, Dave and Paul being idiots in the Todd River. We are in the centre of the Australian Outback, in the middle of the Todd 'River' (which flows underground except for about one day a year). We set up a bunch of silly polo shots on the sand and got in the local newspaper for our trouble. The locals were quite helpful, saying things like 'No water here. You go Darwin'.

Not a bad place to be
Great Keppel Island

Me, Dave and Paul at Ellery Hole, near Alice Springs. (The outback).
Three kayakers

Kim and I took a trip to the Barossa Valley in South Australia (Australia's premier wine growing region) during the annual wine festival. Lots of towns all over the place throwing markets for a couple of weeks, nice B&B's, heaps of wineries and beautiful weather. Nice trip.
Barossa Valley

A waterhole a hundred clicks or so from Alice Springs. We had a few boats, the locals were splashing around, we were assured of the lack of crocodiles... all good.
Dave bustin' a move

For my money, King's Canyon is a much better place than Ayer's Rock. The views are great, the signs explain everything that you're seeing (the geology as well as the aboriginal history) and it's not so bad to walk, even when it's 40 degrees in the shade.

Dave, Paul, Kelly and I went hiking in the middle of the day in the desert in summer up the MacDonell ranges, just out of Alice Springs. (Alice is the town in the back). Pretty tough going but worth it at the top.

The famous Chateau Dorrien! Where Paul and I can get our fix of Mead. They thought we were a bit strange but were happy enough when we walked out with two boxes.
Mead

For those of you that haven't seen one before. These puppies cruise along the highways of the outback, not stopping for much. See all those dead kangaroos on the side of the road? Yeah.

Trying to pass one is fun, when it's doing 120 and the container at the back is wobbling all over the place.
Road Train

Yes it's pretty, yes it changes colours but there are also five gizillion tourists descending upon this sight every sunrise and every sunset. I'd put up the photo of the line of tour buses looking like some highly improbable Evil Knievel stunt but it's too... real.
