Roast on the Croatian Coast

Monday, July 9 2007

By God it was hot in Croatia. It seemed not a day went by when my thermometer did not hit 40 degrees while on the road. That little instrument is not known for its accuracy, but the heat seemed to radiate off the tarmac and I certainly wasn't in rainy northern France any more. It gets quite difficult to regulate...  read more

Upping the tally in the Po Valley

Genoa - Trieste It's getting harder to be the weirdest guy in the hostel. I was getting ready to meet some backpackers for dinner in Genoa when an old man walked into my dorm carrying a full-size, nail-a-dude-to-it cross. 'Hello', I thought, 'we've got a live one here'. I was running late but I couldn't help...  read more

A group of backpackers / couch surfers (and me) went to Vis for a couple of days, and slept on the beach. This is us hanging out on a different beach, I know it looks like concrete but there was a beach there too I promise. I stepped on a sea urchin here.

Mila and Vedrana... 'Mila's place' was the unofficial name of the cafe which became Tim, Thomas and I's second home in Split. This is a fine selection of the incredibly beautiful ladies to be found in Croatia, and Split in particular.

This guy was fantastic. Gah, forgot his name. Anyway, he is 70 years old and has heaps of amazing stories about travelling all over the world. Then, he gets it into his head to go on a cycle tour - his first! If I have ideas like that at that age I will count myself lucky.

<br/>But check out the luggage system... a standard pull-along suitcase with billy cart wheels jammed on the side, complete with independent axles. Then, the carry handle slips over a jury-rigged piece of wood slapped on the bike's rear rack, and away you go! Awesome, puts my 200 pound Arkel bags to shame.

This photo was taken very late in the day, when I was racing towards the town of Cres on the island of Cres after discovering that there was no accomodation where the ferry had dumped me. After a gruelling 400m climb it was stunning scenery, blistering downhills, a setting sun and a tired but victorious body which eventually set up camp. This is travel!
Fighting time in Cres

Just in case anyone thought I was the only one crazy enough to do this - this is Julia, she and Steve are on a year-long cycle tour visiting 40 countries. I meet other cycle tourists pretty regularly and it is always good to team up for a while. One hostel in Croatia said they see one of us about once per week.
Not the only crazy one

This was in Pula... heaps of Roman stuff in this town, including this amazing complete temple. Most temples you see are just a bunch of columns scattered about the ground but this one seems to be surviving pretty well. Incredibly, the Roman Forum of this town is now a children's playground - with the kids climbing around all the 2000 year old pillars littering the ground!
