Vietnam cycling stats

Thursday, February 7 2008

Very fast going through Vietnam, helped by a prevailing Northerly wind, which I consider to be the Yin for my Turkish Yang, where I had a prevailing headwind. 2,324 Kilometres cycled 35 days, of which 22 cycling and 13 resting 66.4 km per day 105.6 km per cycled day 6,363m altitude climbed, which is 289m per...  read more

Highway 1 is done!

Sunday, January 27 2008

Hi everyone, After a long time silent it is time for an update. For those that are not aware (Hanoi journal - http://www.macamat.com/photoserver/journal-entry.do?id=203 ), after backpacking through Asia I had my bicycle sent to me from Istanbul to Hanoi, and on January 1st I started cycling again. 26 days and...  read more

Back from beyond

Sunday, December 30 2007

Well, it has been a while hasn't it. Since I last gave an update five months ago I have hopped off the bike, but nevertheless have been busy crossing all of Asia. In one big hit now - Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China, and Vietnam. I was in Hanoi for the New...  read more

At Mui Ne fishing village.
Four men in a boat

A headwind all day, and 114kms of it - stopped here to catch my breath and eat some cookies.
Rest stop on a tough day

Beautiful, peaceful place, smelt like fish sauce though. Great place to stop for the night between Nha Trang and Mui Ne
Ca Na

Getting a wash and an oil change is good value 'roud these parts - about 35p!
Oso gets a wash

On the road out of Hoi An. This is not particularly unusual but this guy was going slow enough for me to get out my camera
Pigs!

My Son Cham Towers

Cyclos

Lots of tasty fish here.
Fish Market

Near Danang, this was the R&R spot for American GI's. It was pretty damn empty when I passed by.
China Beach

At about 500m high, this pass was long known as a bottleneck between north and south Vietnam, which is why a huge tunnel was built underneath it. Unfortunately, bikes aren't allowed in the tunnel so it was over the top for me. My lack of fitness showed, during the Europe trip I would have eaten this one up but I was gasping.
Hai Van pass

This beach was actually a disappointment - the beach was lovely but the locals' use of it was disastrous, rubbish thrown everywhere. Given there is such a big tourist attraction right nearby you'd think this was financial suicide. But while we were walking around another local wandered up to the hillock over the beach and dumped his trash...
Beach near Hue

Hue citadel

Just north of Hue is the old dividing line between north and south Vietnam. For five kilometres on either side of this river was the DMZ, and this river was the border. My bike is facing towards the south.
At the DMZ

Me in Hanoi, about to hit the road for the South East Asian Odyssey. The bike came through shipping in pretty good condition and I have a tummy to lose again, so it worked out well.
On the road again

Cycling down a hill on the way to Danang. I didn't know it, but this hill was titchy compared to one which was to come after...
