Thailand cycling stats

Saturday, April 5 2008

Lots of days sitting around on beaches dropped the average distance significantly, but for some reason the on-bike days were big so the average distance for cycled days in the largest so far. My speedo stopped working towards the south so the altitude readings stopped, however the trusty GPS still gave...  read more

Finding your island

Friday, March 28 2008

It's been a while since my last update and since then I have travelled all the way down to the south of Thailand, stopping off at plenty of beaches and islands on the way. A couple of days from the Cambodian border and I was in the smoggy chaos of Bangkok. I toured the various bicycle shops attempting to get the...  read more

Ao Pante beach

30 baht ($1) per day to camp in front of the most amazing sunsets I have seen in a long time
Beach camping

Really incredible sunsets at Ao Pante beach on Koh Tarotao, it's hard to believe but there is no image manipulation here at all...
Perfect

I got up an 18! (Australian measurement)
Rockclimbing on Railay

This was heaps of fun - a lagoon which was in the middle of a big limestone karst (sheer hill) requiring lots of clambering up steep slopes and then back down even steeper slopes to reach. Me at the lagoon

Perang(?) beach, north of East Railay. Where sunlounging does battle with rock climbing.
Railay

It's all about the snorkelling here; but the beaches are pretty nice too. :-)
Camp Two, Koh Surin

Lumphini Park, Bangkok. This game is like volleyball but you can only use your head and your feet. I thought it was sensational.
Sepak Takraw

Koh Phayam, near Ranong. Just my kind of developed - a huge beach with space for everyone, bungalow places spaced very wide, a few beach bars. A bit of surf and kayaks for hire completes the picture. Very nice!
There are worse places

It has rained a fair amount on Koh Tao, but not enough to really get in the way. When it does rain, though, it is heavy. This deluge occurred just after we had safely ensconsed ourselves in a nice bungalow restaurant after some snorkelling.
Rainshower

On the way from Bangkok I camped for a night on the beach, near a small fishing village. They were great company, played football with the kids and stuff, but they were early risers! I was wide awake by the time the sun got this far up...
